Security key - single user

Device to protect the software

Most keys are a small plastic stick that slots into any USB port. For the program to run insert the key in a USB port on the computer. The program does NOT run without a security key. It is rare for a key to physically fail so if the program does not run check that the key is in the correct port and is firmly located in the socket.

Look after the key - It gives access to a working system so the replacement cost is high. Insure the key for the full purchase price of the system.

Security keys for single use

Security keys also require some software to be installed. For a key for a single user system the software is installed automatically when the Optimising program is installed. Occasionally the distributor may advise you to update the security key software separately - this can be done by running the program provided named spi.exe - this is also found on the distribution CD-ROM (or directories) in the folder ..\KEYDRIVERS

Security keys for Network use

For a Network security key the security key software has to be installed separately to the Optimising program - see the topic: Install Network key software for details

Advice on handling the security key

While it is quite rare for keys to be damaged just by being handled take note of the following points - especially if the key is handled a lot. If possible turn off the computer and any other equipment attached to the key before moving the key. Before moving any equipment attached to the key, such as a printer, external disk drive, tape back-up etc. make sure the equipment is turned off. Prevent any damage from Static Electricity by grounding yourself before touching a key, for example, by touching a stationery object such as a desk or radiator. If the key is moved around frequently it is best to store it in an anti-static bag. The keys should be stored in the temperature range -40 to +70 Degrees Centigrade (Deg. C.). The operating temperature for the key is 0 to +40 Deg. C.

Notes
