Program does not start and cannot get to the Main screen
If the program does not run there are only a few common causes:-
- Security key is missing or not correctly inserted or cannot be found by the program
- Language files are missing
- Not enough memory
Security key problems
● Check the security key is in place and firmly inserted and that it is in the correct port
It is possible for a key to be faulty but this is rare - check for other problems first
For a Network key it is more likely the key cannot be found. There are several causes for this.
- Network is down
- PC or server with the key is not running
- Network key licence manager is not running (this is quite common)
The licence manager runs on the same PC or server as the Network key. Sometimes the licence manager software can stop running and it may be necessary to restart the PC or server to get the licence manager software running again. Always check for this as it is a fairly common problem. See the Networks section for details.
System check - even if the program does not run the system check program can be run to check the program and system install and the licence manger. Use Windows Explorer to move to the program directory (where the program was installed) and double click on the program CHECK.EXE to run the system checks. See the System Check help section for details.
Help - the full help file is available even if the program does not run. On the PC where the program is installed move to the directory where the help is installed. This is not where the program is installed but it usually a windows directory, for example: c:\windows\v11hist\. Locate the help file (which is a large file named number.chm e.g. 00.chm (the number depends on the language in use). Double click on this file to open it.
Language file problems
If a message (in English) appears:-
Error reading language file
This means the language file is missing or is not available. In this case the message reports the language file it is trying to find and suggests an alternative.
Language modules are files with the extension LNG and are usually located in the Program directory (where the program is installed).
The program cannot run without a language file. Use Windows Explorer to check the location of the LNG files.
Memory problems
A minimum of 200Mb of free physical memory is required to run the program. The program does not run if the value is below this. Free memory depends on the programs currently running and the operating system.
Use the System check program (as described above) to check the system - this program should run even if the memory is below 200Mb.
Software support Expiry date
From V10 onwards the licence includes an expiry date for support. It is unlikely that this is missing or corrupted but if it is the program does not run. Use 'System check' to look at the date shown - if it is missing or garbled this is the cause of the program not running.
