Working with large numbers of finish or colour combinations for edging
Where working with material that is offered in a vary large number of different finishes or colours but in only a few basic sizes it is not very convenient to enter every material/finish combination in the edging libary (or include the material in the Board library).
For example:-
GREEN-TAPE
WHITE-TAPE
BLACK-TAPE
ASH-TAPE
RED-TAPE
TEAK-SOLID
ASH-SOLID
GREEN-LAMINATE
WHITE-LAMINATE
TEAK-LAM-A
TEAK-LAM-B
ASH-LAM-A
ASH-LAM-B
.....
In this situation it is more convenient to make use of the: Edge code variable option
The idea is that the Edging library or Board library only contains a general description of the material type, for example, TAPE, or LAMINATE.
The finish is added at the Part list using the Edging code Information box. For example:-
Edging library
Code Description Material Gr Fn Thk
TAPE Tape N 1 1.0
The finish such as 'Red', 'Ash', 'Teak' etc. is added at the Part list using the Edging code information boxes.
Part list
Part code Edge 1 Edge 2 Edge 3 Edge 4
PART/01 TAPE=WHITE TAPE=GREEN TAPE=BLUE TAPE=RED
PART/02 TAPE=RED TAPE=RED TAPE=ASH TAPE=ASH
The different tape colours are kept separate in the Edging summary and can be analysed and costed separately.
Edging Summary
Code Description Material Thk. Cost Total Total
/m length Cost
TAPE=WHITE Tape 1.0 0.15 32.15 4.82
TAPE=GREEN Tape 1.0 0.15 16.05 2.40
TAPE=BLUE Tape 1.0 0.15 18.20 2.73
TAPE=RED Tape 1.0 0.15 33.63 5.04
TAPE=ASH Tape 1.0 0.15 18.25 2.73
The following example shows the method used for Laminate pieces.
In this case the material code for the laminate piece consists of the material code in the Edging library plus the colour or finish.
Edging library
Code Description Material Gr Fn Thk
LAM-A Laminate strips LAMINATE-1MM Y 3 1.0
LAM-B Laminate postform LAMINATE-1MM Y 4 1.0
Part list
Part code Edge 1 Edge 2 Edge 3 Edge 4
PART/01 LAM-A=ASH LAM-A=ASH LAM-A=TEAK LAM-A=GREY
Cutting list
Part code Material
PART/01 MCF15
L0001 LAMINATE-1MM=ASH
L0001 LAMINATE-1MM=ASH
L0001 LAMINATE-1MM=TEAK
L0001 LAMINATE-1MM=GREY
Where there is no material code set in the edging library the material code in the cutting list is set to code in the Edging code information box.
Solid edging - solid edges are not optimised and are placed in a separate part list called the 'picking list'.
Edging library
Code Description Material Gr Fn Thk
SOLID-A Timber pieces Timber Y 2 1.5
SOLID-B Coated metal Coated N 2 1.7
Part list
Part code Edge 1 Edge 2 Edge 3 Edge 4
PART/01 SOLID-A=OAK SOLID-A=ASH SOLID-A=TEAK SOLID-A-ASH
Picking list
Description Material
SOLID-A=OAK TIMBER=OAK
SOLID-A=ASH TIMBER=ASH
SOLID-A=TEAK TIMBER=TEAK
SOLID-A=ASH TIMBER=ASH
Note - where there is no material code set in the edging library the material code in the cutting list is set to code in the Edging code information box.
Long material codes - it can happen (for laminates) that the material code created for the cutting list is too long, for example:-
LAM-A=SCARLET3MMPVCLAMINATE
In this case the material code is set to 'LAM-A=' and the rest of the code is placed in the Colour name information box.
Cutting list
Part code Material Colour name
PART/01 MCF15
L0001 LAM-A= SCARLET3MMPVCLAMINATE
If long material codes are likely to occur make sure that the colour name box is setup otherwise an error is reported when attemping to make the cutting list.
