Overs did not reduce waste

Question. I thought that the optimiser would only use overs where this improved the waste but in a recent run I got a better result with 0% overs than with 10% overs. How can this be?

Answer. Because optimisation is a complex problem if you offer a wider choice of options such as allowing it to consider overs (over-production of parts) you reduce the time available for other calculations. Usually this does not matter as using the overs makes a big difference to the waste - but if the overs cannot be used very much anyway considering them gives the optimiser less time for other calculations and you may occasionally get a worse result.
