Variable type

Field at the variables table

There are three ways in which a variable can operate.

0 - variable

1 - global

2 - locked

- Enter the type required

Variable - the variable may take a different value for each part or product and so must be asked for on every line at the Orders or Requirements screen.

Global - the variable applies to the whole requirements list and so is asked for just once for the entire list. A common example is to use global variables for order information such as: Batch number, Date of despatch etc.

Locked  - Usually the variable answers have to be resolved at the Orders or Product requirements screen. If a variable does not have an answer (from the user,  variables table, or answer table) the program reports an error.  When you set a variable as - Locked  - you mean that the item is variable in the usual way but the answer does not need to be changed at the Order or Requirements screen and the item does NOT appear in the variables dialog.

That is, the answer to this variable is supplied by the variables table or  answer table and cannot be changed. This also allows variable answers to be set from other programs, for example,  from a Wizard utility for the setup of Product definitions.
